The management interface provides device and site navigation (see Figure 13). Xirrus Management System
(XMS) can also place Arrays on imported floor-plan graphics, based on physical location, and set them up in a
hierarchical fashion. It is easy to navigate the system from Array to Array and to the individual IAPs within an
Array.
Figure 13: Xirrus Management System
The system provides load-balancing and band-steering capabilities, but no ATF. The Xirrus Array provides a
multi-radio design that delivers more radios, and hence more total Wi-Fi capacity, for a given physical area than a
traditional two-radio design. Xirrus recommends using more radios, and hence fewer users per radio, to deal with
issues of ATF. In addition, the Array provides traffic shaping by enabling administrators to set a packets-per-
second limit for a station or SSID. Configuration-policy templates can be chosen from an existing Array or
created from scratch.
Xirrus provides an SLA capability that is designed to improve network availability and resiliency. The Xirrus
Array will test the WLAN by periodically sending test messages to itself (called Radio Assurance) and will also
check the availability of network resources (called Network Assurance), such as Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS) servers.
Problem-diagnosis capabilities are Array-centric. For instance, if a user is currently unassociated, the helpdesk has
to infer which Array the user is closest to because the XMS does not contain unassociated station historical
information. Also the system is not yet able to correlate per-client and per-AP statistics with location and time.
The Array provides channel-based spectrum analysis via the dedicated monitor radio. The 802.11a/jointfilesconvert/319554/bgn radio on
each Array can be dedicated to threat-detection and spectrum-analysis functions. Spectrum classification is not
supported.
